![]() "Britt-Marie Was Here" is based on a novel by Fredrik Backman ( A Man Called Ove), whose themes often include cranky people who isolate themselves and community sports that bring people together. But she does know about cleaning, and the rec center is a mess, covered with graffiti on the outside and filled with grime and clutter on the inside. ![]() ![]() Britt-Marie does not know anything about soccer, coaching, or children. The job includes coaching a soccer team of 10-year-olds. She leaves him and takes the only job she is offered: a temporary position as a youth leader at a soon-to-be-closed recreation center in Borg, a remote and struggling small town. Baking soda can get out stains, but it cannot protect Britt-Marie from wrenching disappointment when she is confronted with her husband's affair. "Baking soda solves more of the world's problems than football." "I've never in my life felt the urge to kick something," she says. She has no interest in sports and would rather keep the house tidy, usually with her favorite cleanser. When he is at home, he watches football (soccer). When her husband's business takes him out of town, she stays home. ![]() As a young girl, she dreamed of going to Paris with her free-spirited sister. Doing the laundry, making dinner, knowing what to expect are what make Britt-Marie feel safe. ![]() ![]() ![]() Olivia ends up having to make all the hard decisions for her mother, and take on way too much responsibility, basically bringing up her little sister and believing everything is actually her fault. It’s not that her mom is irresponsible, but she’s stressed because Olivia’s dad left, overworked because she has to care for two children alone and she is just not handling it. She is actually very cute about it, giving her sister creative lessons she finds on the internet. Olivia is every bit as responsible as her parents aren’t, so she misses school because there’s no one to watch over her little sister. It’s just the three of them – her, her little sister and their mom. What is the book about? We start by meeting Olivia, who is a 13 year old girl living in a trailer park. ![]() It’s definitely a 4 star read, and I loved it. It took me through a rollercoaster of #feels, and although it took a while for it to really get serious, by the end it didn’t just make me angry at (some) adults and their horrible decisions, it also made me almost cry. So let’s get down to the facts.Īs you might have surmised, it’s a pretty emotionally loaded book. And that it would probably have typical tropes. I thought it would be pretty forgettable. Then I thought it would be a three star read. ![]() So at first I thought this book would be easy and fun. But for some unknown reason I have a hard time visualizing the worlds in science fiction novels. It’s not that I don’t like it! I fracking love all things Firefly, Battlestar Galactica, and Star Trek. My Thoughts: I don’t read too much science fiction. Now in possession of information everyone wants, information that they’d kill for, Jeth has to decide what he’s willing to do for his freedom and how he’ll keep his sister, Lizzie, and the rest of his crew safe. Lizzie grinned and said into the comm, “This is the Montrose. “Oh sure,” Jeth said, not nearly as amused by the situation as she was. “Just thought you should know,” she said, winking. Whatever it is, I loved it and couldn’t put this one down. Perhaps that’s the Australian vibe coming through that gives it that quality. Think Sally Rooney, but distinctly Australian and definitely more…I don’t know… dare I say, relatable, even though I’m far from my twenties. Seeing Other People was such a different novel from her first, and that right there, is how you make a name for yourself. This was SO GOOD! I had wondered how Diana Reid would follow up Love and Virtue, her impactful debut from last year. ![]() ![]() ![]() Louise Wallace (Writing for the Page, 2008)Įleanor Catton (Writing for the Page, 2007) Tina Makereti (Writing for the Page, 2008) Hera Lindsay Bird (Writing for the Page, 2011)ĭavid Coventry (Writing for the Page, 2010)īreton Dukes (Writing for the Page, 2009)Īshleigh Young (Writing for the Page, 2009) Gemma Bowker-Wright (Writing for the Page, 2011) Helena Wiśniewska Brow (Writing for the Page, 2013) Nina Mingya Powles (Writing for the Page, 2015)Ĭatherine Robertson (Writing for the Page, 2015)ĭoug Dillaman (Writing for the 4)Ĭraig Gamble (Writing for the Page, 2014)įaith Wilson (Writing for the Page, 2014) Nick Bollinger (Writing for the Page, 2015)ĭavid Brechin-Smith (Scriptwriting, 2015) Maria Samuela (Writing for the Page, 2017)Ĭhessie Henry (Writing for the Page, 2016)Īnnaleese Jochems (Writing for the Page, 2016) ![]() Laura Southgate (Writing for the Page, 2018) Rebecca K Reilly (Writing for the Page, 2019)Ĭris Cucerzan (Writing for the Page, 2019) Kristene Cristobal (Writing for the Page, 2020) International Institute of Modern Letters's home. ![]() ![]() Though Sally has always led a very vigorous life, she tells Ruth she has "fallen."
